Mr. Yamato and his White Linen Suit

You get the feeling right about this time in July that it will never be cold again, never chilly enough to wear tweed.  You almost give up hope (that comes in August).  Everyone just melts.  Well, let this photo be an inspiration!  How can it get better than a vintage white linen suit? 

The funny part was that it was taken on a very cold day in March.  I think there were still snow flurries happening, but I cajoled Andrew to do some shots outside in that beautiful Edward Hopper light streaming down Grand St in Williamsburg.   With my "summer goggles" on now, sitting at one very warm laptop, it looks every bit a man keeping his cool amidst the headiest days of Summer in the City.

Time to go have a cocktail and not move so fast.

Rory Duffy - Bespoke in Brooklyn

Just around the corner from me, and a few flights up, is a gem of a Savile Row trained tailor, Rory Duffy, who has recently established himself in New York City.  Andrew Yamato introduced me to the young Irishman, and I had a good time chatting with him about his work and the suit he made that won the prestigious Golden Shears award, all the while drinking a good bit of prosecco.

Rory shows us the suit he made that won the Golden Shears 2009, the UK's highest prize for tailoring.  Oh, just an amazingly crafted frock coat with kilt (!) and waistcoat done in a blue window pane (that Dr. Andre Churchwell might find familiar).  Please, someone create an occasion just so this suit can be worn, and I can attend!



Behind the unassuming brick facade there is a real craftsman at work, and Brooklyn should be glad to have him!

Reason to Celebrate

Their are so many reasons to celebrate this last year and heartily welcome the new one.  A big thank you to all my readers, new and old!  I have had such a good time making these images, and to have so many of you enjoy them is a dream come true.

2013 looks to be a huge year for The Dandy Portraits - I will be included in the exhibition at RISD in April,  and more big news that I have to keep hush hush for the time being.  

So have some fun and raise a glass - or your hat - to the coming year!

The Dandy Portraits debuts short film about Sean Crowley

Remember Sean Crowley?  The not easily forgotten tie maven and exquisite Anglophile living in Brooklyn has inspired a short film as part of The Dandy Portraits!  For this portrait Mr. Crowley gives us a rare peep into his world, where there is always time for tea.

The film was made by Rarebit Productions,  a creative partnership between me and my betrothed, Kelly Desmond Bray.  We filmed at Sean's apartment, and also paid a visit to Bobby From Boston and met Bobby Garnett, the owner of the esteemed vintage clothing store in Boston where Sean worked when he was just out of college.   Every inch of Sean's brownstone apartment is filled with his collections (and Meredith might have a shoe or two in there), but to my surprise when I left his environment I felt inspired.  I thought I would feel the need to clear clutter immediately, but instead I could see the delight that comes from having beautiful things surround you.   Enjoy!

Dapper Lou

Meet Ludget Delcy, the multi-talented creator of the men's fashion and street style blog Dapper Lou.  Matt Fox of FineAndDandyShop.com joined me for the visit, and wrote up a dandy profile.  I was surprised to find out that Ludget creates his outfits from the ground up...shoes first!  I love it.  And check out his post about these new bright yellow babies from Paul Smith he bought.

The Enormity of Ties with Mr. Crowley

How does one go about choosing a tie when you have a selection like this?  Sean Crowley, a neckwear designer himself, has literally thousands to choose from.  I imagined that he might just cover his eyes and let fate take over when it came to the enormity of his tie choices, but after talking to him I realize he does not suffer from this dilemma. In fact, the tie isn't even the first thing he thinks of when deciding what to wear.  He says this process does not happen in a regimented way, rather he might be inspired by an occasion or a certain piece of clothing that seems right for that day.  In this last installment of my visit to Mr. Crowley, we see him in a typical work wear outfit.

Quite impressive home bar!  This is the second installment of my epic visit to Sean Crowley's Brooklyn home.  Today you will see him mix up a very tasty cocktail...while dressed down for leisure.


When I ask him what cocktail has he been enjoying lately, he says his tastes have leaned toward straight whiskey.   I suppose to accommodate me as a guest, he picked up his cocktail book and blindly picked a page at random - The Brooklyn it is!

This pretty much sums up my experience of visiting Meredith and Sean... A fun-loving and kind duo, with impeccable taste.  Oh and check how far an antique seltzer bottle can spray water here!

First installment of selects from my epic visit to neckwear designer Sean Crowley and the lovely Meredith Modzelewski.  The amazing collections in their home could fill a whole book - a fantastic coffee table book that everyone would just ooh and ahh over.  I have posted a few extra details here.  There could also be a whole book on Mr. Crowley's ties - but that's for the final installment kids!

We had tea in these gigantic tea cups!   Everywhere I looked there were delightful paintings, clothes, books, these cool metal bell weights, cricket caps, top hats, embroidered crests, ties, ties, bow ties, and more gigantic tea cups, etc. etc.  His predilection is for Anglophilia.  That just sounds bad, but it's not.  We shared the fact that we may just be two of the three or four Americans with subscriptions to The Chap!

Just a sneak peek at a few details from my visit with Mr. Crowley and Ms. Modzelewski on Sun.  There will be portraits, pipe smoke, pajamas, cocktails, and ties-ties-ties!   I had this great feeling of giddiness as I left their epic apt, and could not get home fast enough to look at the pictures.
